A short note from your host, various and sundry items that may interest
you.
I recently spent a week in Iceland seeking traditional folk performers
and
dance groups. My colleague and I met Ingi Johanson from Islandica
a band
that performs and records traditional music, Oskar Guðnason, who
has a wide
repertoire and has had some songs recorded through studios in
Nashville, and
Ingolfur Steinsson, who does records traditional songs and also serves
as a
curriculum music consultant for educators in Iceland.
Regarding dancing, we took a free tango lesson (Argentine, not Finnish)
on
Wednesday night, a regular event. This group also meets about
three times a
week in the winter and once a week in the summer, with a core of about
60 in
attendance. When they have a twice yearly tango festival about
400 people
attend.
There is also a Svenska Förening that celebrates Påsk,
Valborgs, Midsommar,
etc. and there is a folk dance society.
There are two institutions with buildings that house offices, staff,
and
resources that focus on connecting Nordic countries within and outside
of
Iceland, the Norraena Felagið and the Nordic Center.
Are readers
interested in getting connected with any of them? Let me know.
