If you arrive early at a Midsommar celebration perhaps you'll have a chance to maja (my-uh)...weave a long garland of flowers and greenery and drape the majstång (my-stong)--midsommar pole---not Maypole. Volunteers parade the long garland behind a procession of musicians, marching to a Scandinavian gånglåt (gong-lote) a walking song. They drape the midsummer pole, tip it high, up--up and admire nature´s beauty against the summer sky. Everyone then dances around the pole, pretending to be frogs, hopping, bobbing and waving to the music. Then follows music and food with your new Scandinavian friends...what a way to spend the longest day of the summer. |
